There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I'll go first...after 10 years of speculating in the market (read: gambling in high risk assets) I realized I shouldn't ever touch a brokerage account in my lifetime. A monkey would have made better choices than I did. Greed has altered the course of life many times over. I am at an age where I may recover from my actions over the decades, but it has taken its toll. I am frugal and have a good head on me, but having such impulsivity in financial instruments was not how I envisioned my adulthood. Its a bitter pill to swallow, since money is livelihood of my family, but I need to "invest" all I have into relationships, meaningful moments, and fulfilling hobbies.

With the war in Pakistan i had to download reddit, insta and twitter to keep up.

I genuinely despise them so much and going back to non lemmy social media after so long just reminds me of how fucking grateful I am that Lemmy exists.

Bluesky is fine simply bc there is noone there. The people who post moved but the masses didn't.

LinkedIn in lunatics.

Reddit is probably the one ive ended up gating more than any other despite it being the one I could bear pre Lemmy.

Twitter I haven't used much anyways. But feels horrible with the limited use.

Insta is all thirst traps somehow.

I recently purchased [NJ] a condo. It’s a house comprised of 2 units.( these types of 2/3 unit condos are common in NJ.) When I purchased they said, congrats you’re an HOA president! Basically the sellers have setup an LLC for our HOA for both my neighbors and I. We are both new to this so we’re looking for advice on how to get started. Right now we’re trying to find a bank to work with. First I was trying to find a local credit unions but there doesn’t seem to be ones that works with HOA accounts, at least ones that are local. Also not sure if we should have an HOA management tool for just a 2 unit condo.

My understanding thus far is that we should build up our funds and then put some of that money in CDs and brokerage accounts, eventually. Would love bank/credit union recommendations or any other helpful resources (that’s not trying to sell us a product).

I'm considering installing Linux on my laptop but I'm unsure if I should start with a virtual machine first. My main use cases are gaming and coding, so I want to make sure it's the right fit.

What are the pros and cons of using Linux for someone like me? Would starting with VirtualBox be a good idea before going all in?

Hey all,

Every Christmas Eve, my family hosts the dinner and events. For years my Mother has come up with some simple games to keep everyone entertained during the middle-later portion of the night.

She doesn't like anything too complicated. I was wondering if anyone has any simple party games which are fun with extended family around the holidays.

Thanks.

I clarify my question: beyond the event horizon of a black hole, according to general relativity, the space-time flows faster than the speed of light. If it is the case, then, no information can be transmitted from here.

But then, if i drop an apple, say, in the black hole.

The black hole would then gain mass, and i could theorically mesure that gain with the event horizon radius variation and the attraction, meaning that the information of its mass and attraction change went from the center to get out of the event horizon.

In other words, that gravity information would have been faster than light?

How is that possible and where did i not understand something? (Just daydreamed about this stuff so maybe my question in itself is idiotic, sorry physicists)

So, I work in the IT department of a company and do my job well, but I was getting sick and needed to take medication again for gastritis.

When I was getting sick, I didn't feel good to work at the office, as the work's hybrid, instead of WFH, and explained to my boss, but worked normally and made all the work that was asked of me, this happened some times, like 2 times in the last month. I got better after started taking medication again and it never happened again. As I said, I work normally and do my time (now I'm in overtime) as asked and code, just that at the time I couldn't get to work at the office.

I have the receipts for the medication (gastritis) I bought at the exact time I told my boss I couldn't get to the office.

But now it seems weird at the office, the boss of my boss doesn't care, but the boss of them cares a lot and takes people to measure which person is at the office (the work is hybrid, not WFH). My boss told this last week, in a weird way (it seemed steered at me), to my team. And I overheard my boss talking to other people in Teams about taking notes and registering things, I think I heard my name too.

I'm now in another project that the boss of my boss is really needing, and I'm doing a good job, even the senior dev said that he wants to take me and another colleague to the team that handled the project before.

So I'm in a doubled edged sword, it seems I do a good job (and people want to steal me), but I'm being recorded for firing by middle management.

What can I do? I already started looking for new jobs, but I wanted to talk to my boss directly about "things being weird at the office", not in a rude manner, but wanting to know what is happening.

Specifically Marilyn Manson and Kanye West. Am I overthinking this?

A long time ago, when I was more invested into TTRPGs, I grew increasingly frustrated with the system of only distributing advancement/experience points at the end of a session.

This always made me think that certain challenges could be better dealt with if the players could access/develop abilities as the game progressed in real time.

At some point, I started to divise a play system that relied on a split experience atribution system, with players being able to automatically rack experience points from directly using their skills/habilties, while the DM would keep a tally of points from goals/missions achieved, distributable at session end.

A practical example: a burglar would have the lockpick skill. The skill would be tiered, with each tier having 100 points to max it out, and the higher the tier, the less experience would be given by making use of the skill, as the skill would be further and further refined and new breakthroughs in its understanding become harder to achieve. But DM attributed XP could either be spent towards maxing out the skill faster or gain a new or linked one, like disarming booby traps.

I drifted away from TTRPG and simply let my idea sit in a drawer in a notebook. Today I found my notes again as I was rummaging through the junk and the it brought some nostalgia.

To those with more experience in TTRPGs: would this be feaseable? Or enticing? Interesting?

In my case I've hated Harry Potter, skinny jeans and Tesla long before that became popular to do.

As in the dream you had while sleeping.

Mine had me seeing the sky distort and turn into some sort of dimensional rift. I remember seeing black goo falling from the sky and seeing a large, sandstone ceiling cover everything. Just beyond the reach of clouds I saw a rocky ceiling with square holes in them that lead into the darkness of space. Then, after getting lost in an ancient pyramid, the sky then turned into planets phasing into one another. Like textures in a video game overlapping one another. I saw lights in the sky flying around like fireflies and hearing a voice saying "You're quarantined on this planet. You may not leave but we can."

If Lemmy had a few LLM-powered accounts for fun and not spam, would you like to interact with them?
I don't recall seeing even a classic utility bot on Lemmy.

I watched a video that uses gravity to boil water just by lifting it and lowering the pressure. explanation is better in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHNoHhbfFDQ

so I'm running the scenario through my head of lifting the bottle to the point of "cold" boil then lowering it down (while keeping the hose above boil level to avoid contamination from the original) and I'm trying to figure out what the issue would be.

would the water vapor never condense until a temperature change happened, would it be too slow at distilling since there can only be as much water vapor can only be as much as the container?

what are the flaws or limitations

I'm sick of having to look up what country an author is from to know which variant of teaspoon they're using or how big their lemons are compared to mine. It's amateur hour out there, I want those homely family recipes up to standard!

What are some good lessons from scientific documentation which should be encouraged in cooking recipes? What are some issues with recipes you've seen which have tripped you up?

Bullied and constantly abused, breaking away finally. Nothing’s happening now and I won’t let it, but I’m badly hurt by these people who don’t even feel guilty or care because they say I’m disgusting.

I’m going to keep them out of sight, out of mind, but it’s easier said than done.

With my college degree basically doing nothing for me at this point, I have been thinking about going back to school and pursuing a trade. I was wondering what are some trades that you recommend?
